The Portugese Fiscal Identification Number (NIF) is 9 digits in the format NNN NNN NNN where the last digit is a check digit. The number may be prefixed with the letters PT. The NIF is used for both individuals and entities. Individual numbers begin with 1 through 3, all other entity numbers start with number 4 or greater. The NIF is also used for VAT identification.
