The Inland Revenue Department Number (IRD) is 8 or 9 digits with optional prefix of NZ. The last digit is a check digit. It is used by the New Zealand Inland Revenue Department to identify businesses and individuals for tax purposes. The IRD number keeps track of the tax an individual or entity pays and helps make sure the right amount is paid or the right entitlements are provided. The IRD is unique to each individual or entity.
