Indonesia Tax ID Numbers
Population Identification Number (NIK)
For Individuals, Example: 2182134807341239
The Indonesian NIK (Population Identification Number) is a 16-digit identifier issued to citizens, structured as PPRRSSDDMMYYXXXX. The first six digits (PPRRSS) encode the person's location when the number was issued, representing province, city/district, and sub-district. This is followed by six digits for the date of birth (DDMMYY), with females distinguished by adding 40 to the day value. The final four digits (XXXX) serve as a unique sequence number to prevent duplicates.
Nomor Pokok Wajib Pajak (NPWP)
For Individuals, Entities, VAT, Example: 02.421.275.5-091.000
The Indonesian NPWP (Tax Identification Number) system underwent significant changes on July 14, 2022, implementing a standardized 16-digit numerical format across all taxpayer categories. For Indonesian residents, this number matches their national identity number (NIK), while non-residents, corporations, and government agencies receive a unique 16-digit number from the Directorate General of Taxes (with pre-existing registrants having a "0" added to their previous 15-digit number). Branch-status taxpayers use their Place of Business Identity Number (NITKU). The previous 15-digit format remains valid until December 31, 2023. While NPWPs aren't automatically issued and require self-registration, married women typically use their husband's NPWP unless they qualify for separate tax treatment through court orders, written agreements, or personal choice. Tax authorities retain the right to issue NPWPs ex-officio to eligible taxpayers who fail to register.
